DENTAL AUXILIARY TRAINING OFFERED BY THE DENTAL AUXILIARY SCHOOL

The Dental Auxiliary School is registered with the University Council of Jamaica and presently has four training programmes, they are:

• Dental Assistant

• Dental Therapist

• Dental Hygiene

• Dental Laboratory Technicians

Two additional programmes - Dental Maintenance Engineer and Dental Surgeon are being proposed.

Dental Assistant Training Programme

Dental Assistants are trained to provide assistance to dental surgeons, hygienists and therapists.  They sterilise equipment, maintain infection control, manage dental stores and take dental records.  In addition, they are trained in dental health education.

Entry Qualification

• a minimum of four passes at the GCE 'O'Level and/or CXC General Proficiency

• the compulsory subjects are English Language, Biology, Mathematics and Office Procedure or Principles of Business

• the compulsory subjects must be passed at no more than two sittings

• applicants must sit an entrance examination which includes an aptitude test, a test in manual dexterity, psychometric test and an interview

Exit Qualification

The duration of training is two years of full time study and the qualification obtained on successful completion is a certificate.

Dental Therapist Training Programme

Dental Therapists work under the supervision of a Dental Surgeon.  They are trained to recognise dental and gum disease, carry out filings, take dental radiographs, extract baby and do prophylaxis on children up to 18 years old.  These individuals also receive training in dental health education and are expected to visit communities and give talks to children on this subject.

Dental Hygiene Training Programme

Dental Hygienists are trained in the care of the gum and the supporting tissues of the teeth in both adults and children.    They should always work under the supervision of a Dental Surgeon.

Dental Laboratory Technicians Training Programme

Dental Laboratory Technicians are responsible for the manufacture of appliances and prostheses prescribed by Dental Surgeons.

• a minimum of five passes at the GCE 'O'Level and/or CXC General Proficiency

• passes in the compulsory subjects of English Language, Biology, Mathematics and Technical Drawing.  The compulsory subjects must be passed at no more than two sittings

• applicants must sit an entrance examination which includes an aptitude test, a test in manual dexterity, psychometric test and an interview

Exit Qualification

The duration is three years and the qualification received on successful completion is a Certificate.
