Jamaica Flour Mills Foundation Scholarships (Undergraduate & Graduate)

Applications are invited for Scholarships to be offered by the Jamaica Flour Mills Foundation to pursue full-time study at the U.W.I, U-Tech, and Northern Caribbean University (N.C.U.).

 

Eligibility

  1. Undergraduate

  • Three (3) subjects at A' Levels GCE with at least a B average or Three (3) 2-unit CAPE Courses at Grade 1 or 11

  • An average of at least Grade B in examinations for students enrolled in Diploma or Degree Programmes

    2.  Graduate

  • A First Degree at First Class or Upper Second Class level.

Candidates must be:

  • 17-35 years of age

  • Jamaica citizens

Obligations

  • Successful candidate will be required to work in Jamaica for two (2) years for each year of the Scholarship upon completion of the course of study.

Exclusion

  • Children and/or dependents of persons employed at Jamaica Flour Mills are not allowed to apply for these scholarship.

Carreras Post Graduate Scholarship 2005 -2006

Applications are invited from Jamaica with at least an Upper Second Class Degree or equivalent

The value of the Scholarship will be J$600 000.00 per year for a period not exceeding two years.

 

A letter of Application must be accompanied by;

  • Evidence of acceptance at a university for post graduate studies

Scholarships And Fellowships offered by the Scholarships and Assistance Unit, Ministry of Finance and Planning

The Scholarships and Assistance Unit of the Management Development Branch acts as a point of contact for the various donor agencies and countries offering technical assistance to the Government of Jamaica under bilateral and multilateral agreements. In this regard, this office is responsible for disseminating information on training and study opportunities as they become available.

Undergraduate Programmes (Cuba)

Opportunities for study in Cuba at the B.Sc. degree level are available as under:

  • The Cuba/Jamaica Bilateral Programme; and

  • The Cuba/CARICOM Scholarship Programme

The Government of Cuba offers scholarship opportunities at the undergraduate level in the fields of: 

  • Medicine

  • Information Technology

  • Dentistry

  • Accounting

  • Biochemistry

  • Engineering (all areas)

  • Agronomy

  • Telecommunications

  • Architecture

  • Pharmacy

  • Nursing (Certificate level and Degree)

The programmes are usually advertised between February and March each year for studies commencing in September of that same year. Candidates should be between the ages of 18 and 25 years and have at least two ‘A’ levels in the field related to the course of study they wish to pursue. Prior knowledge of Spanish is an important asset. The study programme is five to six years long and the first year is usually devoted to Language study.

 

Scholarships cover:

  •   Tuition

  •   Accommodation

  •   A stipend from the Cuban Government which has to be supplemented

  •   Medical care

 

Students are required to pay their own airfares.

Undergraduate & Postgraduate Programmes (Organisation Of American States (OAS))

The OAS offers study opportunities at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in OAS member countries including United States of America, Canada, Latin America and Caribbean countries except the applicant’s home country. Applicants are expected to be accepted at a University or Tertiary institution in an OAS member country at the time of applying for the scholarship.

Scholarships are offered in the areas of Education, Finance, Management,  Environmental Studies and Information Technology.  It should be noted, however, that the areas may vary from year to year:

 

Medicine or any other designated clinical areas.

 

Scholarships under this programme will not exceed two years and cover the following:

  •   Tuition

  •   Accommodation

  •   (Return) economy airfare (where applicable)

  •   Living expenses

  •   Medical care

The deadlines for submitting application are early January for postgraduate and early February for undergraduate studies.

Postgraduate (Russia)

The Government of Russia offers scholarships at the Masters and Doctoral levels in the areas of Engineering, Architecture, Biological Sciences,  Veterinary Medicine, Technical Sciences, Agronomy, and Information Systems and Technology. Areas of study may vary from year to year.

 

Applicants should be between the ages of 18 and 27 years old for masters and be under 35 years for doctoral degrees.

The programme is advertised between March and April each year for studies commencing in September of that year with the deadline in May.

The course of study lasts for six years with the first year dedicated to the study of Russian.

Scholarships cover:

  •   Tuition

  •   Accommodation

  •   A stipend from the Russian Government which has to be supplemented

  •   Medical care

 Students are required to pay their own airfares.

Postgraduate Programmes (Overseas)

Association of Commonwealth Universities (Commonwealth Scholarships) tenable in the United Kingdom, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago and New Zealand.

Under the Commonwealth scholarship and fellowship programme opportunities for postgraduate studies are made available on an annual basis to persons interested in pursuing studies at the master or doctoral levels in the countries listed above.

 

Programmes are advertised as they become available as under:

 

  • New Zealand and Trinidad and Tobago - January/February each year with a deadline in March.

  • Canada and the United Kingdom - July each year with a deadline in September

These scholarships are considered “open” as candidates have the option of selecting their areas of study. Medicine, dentistry or other clinical studies are not considered under the Canadian Commonwealth Programme.

 

United Kingdom: Candidates should be under thirty-five years and have at least an Upper Second Class Honours Degree.

 

Canada/ New Zealand: No upper age limit is stressed under these programmes but preference is given to candidates who obtain their qualification in the past five years.

 

Trinidad and Tobago: Nominations are invited a year in advance of study. Short listed candidates are interviewed before the final number for nomination is submitted. Trinidad awards may not be available every year.

Japan/Inter-American Development Bank (Japan/IDB) Scholarship Programme

Under the Japan/IDB Programme opportunities are provided for study at the postgraduate level in an IDB member country except the applicants own. This programme is advertised in March each year with a deadline in May for studies in September of that same year.

 

Applicants should be under thirty-five years old and be accepted at an institution of higher learning at the time of applying. The list of member countries is usually attached to the application form.

 

Scholarships cover:

  •   Tuition

  •    Accommodation

  •    Airfare (return economy)

  •    Book allowance

  •    Maintenance allowance

Please note:

All awardees are required to sign bonds to return and serve the country or the Government for a stipulated period.

Scholarships And Fellowships offered by the Ministry of Education Youth and Culture

GENERAL TEACHERS’ SCHOLARSHIP

The scholarship is available for a first Degree in Arts, Education, Economics or Accounts at the University of the West Indies for  two (2)-three (3) years.  Its value is the cost of tuition.

 

Eligibility

Candidates should be:

  • Jamaican nationals

  • Trained teachers with at least two (2) years teaching experience and  eligible for study leave

  • Desirous of pursuing a first degree in Arts, Education, Economics or Accounts.

  Conditions Of Award:

  • All scholarships are tenable at the University of the West Indies, Mona

  • Applicants must be eligible for study leave; and all applicants should be accepted to the University of the West Indies

  • Successful candidates will be bonded to teach in a government owned educational institution for three (3) years

  • The Scholarship award is valid for the academic year immediately following the offer of the award and cannot be deferred for any reason

Diploma in Education

The scholarship is available for a Diploma in Education at the University of the West Indies.   It is tenable for  one year and its value is the cost of tuition.

Eligibility

Candidates should be:

  • a Jamaican national

  • Posses a First Degree and desirous of pursuing teaching as a career

  

Conditions Of Award:

  • Teacher applicant must be eligible for study leave and all applicants should be accepted to the University of the West Indies.

  • Successful applicant will be bonded to teach in a Government owned Educational Institution for three (3) years.

  • The Scholarship award is valid for the academic year immediately following the offer of the award and cannot be deferred for any reason.

Grace Kennedy Scholarship (Open)

This scholarship is tenable for any first degree at the University of the West Indies (Mona).  Its tenure is for three to five years and it covers tuition fees, maintenance and book allowance.  Applicants should not be older than 19 years on June 1 of the year of the qualifying examination (i.e. Cambridge A' Levels or CAPE).

Eligibility

 

Candidates should:

·        Be sitting the Cambridge ‘A’ Level or CAPE examination in at least three subjects and General Paper in June.

·        Have been born in Jamaica, or if not his/her parents should be domiciled in Jamaica either at the time of the applicants’ birth or during the entire period of five years immediately preceding the year of the examination.

·        Have resided in Jamaica for a period of at least five years immediately preceding the examination.

·        In the case of the Jamaica Centenary Scholarship applicant (Male/Female)  must each submit a certificate showing that he/she has attended a Public Primary (Infant school excluded) for at least three years.  The 2005/2006 awardee will be a female.

[The seven (7) Jamaica Scholarships are awarded on a yearly basis to Jamaican Scholars whose performance was most outstanding in the G.C.E. ‘A’ Level Examination].

 

Conditions Of Award:

·        Successful candidates will be bonded to work in Jamaica for a period not exceeding five(5) years.

·        The Scholarship award is valid for the academic year immediately following the offer of the award and cannot be deferred for any reason.

ISSA Foundation Scholarship (Open to Male and Female In Alternate Years)

Tenable for a first degree being pursued at the University of the West Indies (Mona) Management Studies and University of Technology (UTECH) Business Management in the School of Business Administration.  The tenure is for three years and it is for tuition fees , books and maintenance allowances.  Applicants should be under 25 on the 1st of October of the award year.

Eligibility

Candidates should:

·        Be a Jamaican national

·         Have resided in Jamaica for a period of at least five (5) years immediately preceding the year of the award

·         Meet the matriculation requirements of the University of the West Indies.

 

Conditions Of Award:

·        Successful candidates will be bonded to work in Jamaica for a period not less than five (5) years.

·        The Scholarship is valid for the academic year immediately following the offer of the award and cannot be deferred for any reason.

The 2005/2006 Awardee will be a male.

Jamaica Technical High School Scholarship (Open)

This scholarship is tenable at the University of Technology.  Applicants should be pursuing a degree or diploma which should have a duration of not more than three years.  The scholarship covers tuition fees and book allowance.

 

Eligibility

Candidates should:

·         Be sitting at least five (5) subjects in the CXC/GCE O’ Level Examination, two of which should be English and Mathematics.

·        Be full-time student of a Technical High School.

·        Meet the matriculation requirements of the University of Technology.

 

Conditions Of Award:

·        Applicants should apply directly to the University of Technology for admission.

·        Successful candidates will be bonded to work in Jamaica for a period not exceeding five (5) years.

·        The scholarship is valid for the academic year immediately following the offer of the   award and cannot be deferred for any reason.

John J. Mills Scholarship

Tenable at the University of the West Indies for any first degree.  The tenure is three years and the value is tuition plus an allowance of $50,000.00.  There is no age limit.

Eligibility

Candidates should be:

·        Graduate of a Teachers’ College.

·        Jamaican National.

·        Accepted at the University of the West Indies.

Current scholarship holders are not eligible

Principals of teachers’ colleges are asked to nominate no more than three (3) candidates annually.  The nomination is based on merit.

 

Conditions Of Award:

·        Candidates should be eligible for study leave.

·        Successful candidate will be bonded to work in a Government owned Institution for a period not exceeding five (5) years.

·        The Scholarship is valid for the academic year immediately following the award and cannot be deferred for any reason.

Jamaica Government Exhibition Award

Tenable for any first degree at the University of the West Indies.  Funds disbursed under the scholarship will cover tuition fee and book allowance.

Eligibility

Candidates should be:

·        Jamaican Nationals.

·        Be sitting University Scholarship Examination.

 

The Jamaica Government Exhibition Scholarship is awarded on a yearly basis to Jamaican Nationals whose performance was most outstanding in the annual University Scholarship Examinations.

 

Conditions Of Award:

·        Successful candidates will be bonded to work in Jamaica for a period not less than five (5) years.

·        The Scholarship is valid for the academic year immediately following the award and cannot be deferred for any reason.

 

N.B.:  Scholarship Examinations are generally held in February at the University of the West   Indies.

Emancipation Scholarship (Undergraduate, Open to Male & Female)

Tenable at the University of the West Indies and University of Technology for three to five years.  Applicants can pursue any first degree, however, they should be under twenty-five (25) years on August 1st of the year of the award.  The funds disbursed should cover tuition and maintenance.  In addition, a book allowance will be granted.

Eligibility

Candidates should be:

·        accepted by or attending the institutions or have made his/her own application for admission to the Institution.

·        Jamaican Citizen, domiciled in Jamaica during the last five (5) years.

 

Conditions Of Award:

·        The successful candidate will be bonded to work in Jamaica for a period not less than five (5) years.

·        The Scholarship is valid for the academic year immediately following the award and cannot be deferred for any reason.

Offered for any course at the University of Technology.  The duration of the course should be three to five years.  Funds should cover tuition and book allowance.  Applicants should be no more than thirty (30) years old on October 1st of the year of the Award.

·        accepted by or attending the University of Technology or have made his/her own application for admission to the University of Technology.

·        Jamaican Nationals.

Mathematics/Science With Education

Tenable for three years at the University of the West Indies, Mona.  Scholarship will cover tuition.  Additionally, there will be maintenance of thirty-five thousand dollars ($35,000.00) and book allowance of fifteen thousand dollars ($15,000.00)

Eligibility

Candidates must be graduates of a secondary school, community college or teachers’ college and must either:

·        have obtained passes in five (5) subjects at CXC (General Proficiency or equivalent) including English (A), Mathematics and two (2) approved Science subjects; OR

·        be pursuing a similar programme of study at U.W.I.

 

Conditions Of The Award:

·        All scholarships are tenable at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus.

·        All applicants should be accepted at the University of the West Indies, Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences (Majoring in Maths or Science with a minor in Education).

·        Successful candidates will be bonded to teach in a Government-owned institution for at least three (3) years.

Emancipation Postgraduate Scholarships

Candidate may pursue any degree programme offered at the University of the

West Indies, however preference will be given to the following areas of study:

·        Applied Technology in Agriculture

·        Information Technology

·        Mathematics

·        Environmental Studies

The scholarship is tenable at the University of the West Indies (Mona, Cave Hill or St. Augustine) and it is valid for the duration of the course.  The value is three hundred and fifty thousand dollars ($350,000.00) and the applicant should be under forty-five (45) years old on the first of August in the year of the award.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

·        have at least an Upper Second Class honours degree, or its equivalent,  from a recognized University.

·        be Jamaican citizens domiciled in Jamaica for at least five years.

 

Conditions Of Award:

·        Successful candidates will be bonded to work in Jamaica for a period not less than three (3) years.

·        The Scholarship is valid for the academic year immediately following the award and cannot be deferred for any reason.

Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social Science Scholarship (Post-Graduate)

Tenable at the Consortium Graduate School of Social Sciences, U.W.I.  for an M.Sc. Development Studies.  The tenure is two years and the value is US$6,000.00 p.a.

Eligibility

Candidates should:

·        meet the matriculation requirements for the Consortium Graduate School of Social Sciences.

·        be Jamaican Citizen, domiciled in Jamaica during the last five (5) years.

 

Conditions Of Award:

·        Successful candidates will be bonded to work in Jamaica for a period not less than three (3) years.
