NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY (NSU)

Nova began operations in 1964.  Today it is the largest independent university in Florida with an alumni of 73,000 and more than 19,000 students. It is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to award Bachelor, Master, Education Specialist and Doctoral degrees since 1971.  NSU offers several degree programmes through distance learning.  This includes the BSc in Business and Professional Management, MBA for Working Professionals, MSc in Human Resource Management and DBA which are offered in Jamaica. 

 

Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Business and Professional Management (BPM)

Admission Requirements

Applicants must have  at least 60 college level credits for full matriculation (please refer to the listing of approved institutions for credit awards) or a minimum of 30 college credits for provisional acceptance.  Applicants with Prior Learning Credits must submit High school transcript and proof of passes in 5 CXC or GCE O' level subjects.

Duration

Thirty months comprising 10 semesters.  Each semester lasts for three months and there are four semesters in each academic year.

 

Application Fee

There is a non-refundable fee of US$35.00 which must accompany each application.  The must be paid by US$ bank draft payable to Nova Southeastern University.  Applicants with prior learning credits (CPS, LOMA, ACS, HIAA, JIM, IMP, UWI School of Continuing Studies etc) may be required to pay up to US$50.00 for transfer of credits.

 

Transcripts

For applicants to be processed, transcripts must be received from all the institutions listed on the application form.  Transcripts are to be mailed to Nova Southeastern University, P.O. Box 545, Ocho Rios, St. Ann.

 

Tuition Fees

Tuition fees (payable in US$ or J$) are due on the last Saturday of each semester for the semester to follow.  Effective 1 July 2002, the tuition fee will be US$675 per subject.  US Financial Aid (student loan) is available to qualified applicants.  [Tuition fees are subject to change without notice.]

 

Course Structure

Students usually register for two 3-credit hour courses each semester.  Exams may be given during and at the end of the semester.

 

Class Structure and Instructors

Classes are held every two weeks on weekends as follows:

*  Saturdays - 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

*  Sundays - 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Instruction is provided by overseas and local lecturers.

 

Books/Materials

Textbooks and selected materials required for the course are provided by the University.

 

Master in Business Administration (MBA) and MSc in Human Resource Management (HRM)

Qualification

Applicant must have a bachelor degree.  GMAT is required if the Grade Point Average (GPA)1 is less than 2.5.  Prerequisites where applicable must be done before the relevant graduate course in the programme can be taken.

(1GPA is determined by NSU from transcripts.)

 

Prerequisites

Prerequisites for MBA are Accounting, Economics, Finance, Marketing and Statistics.

 

Duration

Eighteen months comprising six semesters.  Each semester lasts for three months and there are four semesters in each academic year.

Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)

Entry Requirement

  1. Applicants must have a Master degree with GPA of 3.25 or greater

  2. Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) score of 500 or greater.  (See Application form for other requirements.

  3. Application fee of US$50.00payablke by bank draft to Nova Southeastern University must accompany each application.

 

Duration

Three to seven years.

 

Tuition, Payment Options and Financial Assistance

US$500.00 per credit hour.  [See on-line catalogue for other administrative expenses (www.huizenga.nova.edu)].  The tuition fees are payable at any branch of Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS).  They can also be paid using a valid US credit card (Mastercard, Visa, Discover, American Express).  Financial aid is available to qualified applicants.

The terms are January to March, May to July and September to December.  Instruction is provided by lecturers from the United States.  Local lecturers are used where appropriate.
